    Re: dual disks?

I'm bolting the front tree and forks from an 83 Seca Turbo on. You could use the front end off of an 80ish XS as well (got one of those laying around too).

Again, I have the dual fork setup off an '80 XS850 complete if your interested. Or you can source the needed items off of fleabay or the local wrecker. A lot of the years are interchangable.

singingotter has a dual front break setup.

When I was over talking to him I believe he said it was off a 700?

Most of the Maxims and Secas are interchangeable on about everything from what Ive seen.

Certain year XJ750's had the dual disks, and I think all of the XJ900's did. In fact, I'm pretty sure the XJ900's had a rear disc too. Anyway, my friend's '85 Maxim 750 has dual front discs.

I converted mine over two years ago. The front forks came off of an '82 XJ750. They are the air-filled adjustable type. I love them! Definitely an improvement. If I had to guess I'd say the original setup was 50/50 front/rear braking ability, and now I'm closer to 70/30. This summer I'm putting on the SS brake lines, and maybe a brake reservoir/master cylinder from an XJ1100 if I'm not happy with the SS lines. I'm approaching this in a step-wise method as too much braking on the front and I'll end up with a "tank-slapper". The Conti Milestones I put on the front & rear are really sticky so braking hasn't been a problem, and I've only squeaked the rear tire once in one of many 55-0mph stops on Rte 51, Ryan knows what I'm talking about - crazy farmers...lol. It stops on a dime, but I still feel the front needs more power. The SS lines should be the ticket.

I'm assuming you mean a 550, search ebay UK and Germany for XJ550 (they have no Maxim's) as the euro model had twin discs. You only need another disc, one fork slider, caliper, 5/8" master cylinder and lines to convert it.

Certain year US-spec XJ750's had dual discs too. My friend's has the dual discs, I'm thinking it's an '85 or '86, can't remember for sure.

Hey, I am having trouble with my master cylinder (82 XJ750). Did I see that you can put another model's master cylinder on? How about one from a Virago? ( I would like more chrome rather than the black) Thanks

I've read that the XS1100 is a good upgrade master cylinder for those with dual disc fronts. IIRC, it's also good for those who have swapped to flat bars, as it fixes the mirror mount issue and also keeps the resevoir level to the ground.

Yes, I have those flat bars. I came across somewhere that you could substitute the XJ1100. My dual disc front brakes have gone soft suddenly and I am not sure if it is the Master Cylinder or not. This bike sat outside for 2-3 years, so I have been steadily replacing as much as I can. This winter will be the full engine rebuilt. But I have more than 1200 miles on her since November, so I can't complain about her. I am not familiar with the IIRC, but I will see what I can come up with.

Check the c-clip that holds the piston in the reservoir. Mine went soft and it was because the c-clip rusted out and the piston was being pushed back to far and admitting air into the lines.

To see the clip, just take the screw out that holds the brake lever off and you can see up inside. If parts fall out, then the c-clip has rusted away. A new rebuild kit has everything you need to fix her up.

I will do that tonight. I flushed out the brake fluid last night. It improved but did not restore the braking on the front brake.

The clip was very loose. I replaced it and wanted to measure the brake pad thickness. I have the service manual, and it said to remove the retaining pin and hold the sping with a pair of pliers. It did not say that the pin required an allen wrench to remove and King Kong had installed them. One of the pins was rounded, so I am taking off the calipers today....
