    Hey guys,new rider here.I just bought an 83 XJ650.Checking the air filter today,I discovered a small bird's nest--yes,a bird's nest!Needless to say,I need a new filter.My question is,how much difference is there between stock filter and the K and N replacement ?

K and N you can dip in gasoline and "wash" it to use over and over... I use a K and N on my jeep with a female sock over it to just change out the sock and not have to go through the process... you figure a stock filter is about $20 and the K&N is about $40.. If you plan on keeping the bike... go with a K

I would not use the K&N if i were you. I have heard that because of the better air flow it can mess with your fuel air mixture settings. I read of a guy that put this in and could not get his bike to run the way he wanted. Changed back to the original and it ran great again. Just a thought.

I've heard this also, but I've been using K&N filters in my cars for about 8 years with zero adverse effects. And I love that I get to just clean it instead of going out and buying a new one.

To be honest, my 1998 camaro gets better gas mileage with a K&N in instead of a "regular" paper filter.

I also use k&N in my car's but I believe the computer is what keeps the air to fuel mixture correct, where a 1981 xj doesnt have a computer. Correct?

I'm brand new at this,so I'd rather avoid anything that could cause me problems.I think I'll go with the stock. Thanks for the replies.

    I love pyramid quoting.

As far as I know the K&Ns are the same flow rate really, so I was under the impression they wouldnt affect air/fuel mixture.

If thats true, then how can K&N filters get better mpg?

Because they might let a bit more air in but not a whole lot with just a stock air box, you shouldn't notice a diffrence at all, just might filter a bit better than stock.

K&N's claim to fame is two fold. One, the 1,000,000 mile guarantee. Provided you clean the filter and re-oil it at the recommended intervals.

The second is better air flow.

They even have a display setup where you can see the difference in air flow between a stock filter and the K&N.

bcroach78 is correct. In a modern automobile engine, the computer controls the fuel injection and using the mass air flow sensor, it adjusts the amount of fuel to the amount of air to create as close to perfect conditions as possible.

The 88 camaro has a rudimentary computer in comparison and throttle body which is a simplistic fuel injection.

With most automobile engines, the problem has always been looks versus works. So, the air inlet is kinked all over the place. The K&N filter has less restriction so it allows what air makes it in to go into the engine.

Well, at least those are my $.02.

I have been using a K&N air box filter on my XJ650 for over a year. I bought it because I couldn't find a replacement for the old OEM paper one which was in bad shape.

I have not noted any performance issues whatsoever. I believe K&N states it should not require any adjustments over the stock. I have used K&N filters on my cars and airplanes and would recommend them.

    my $.02

That's what I love about America. The choices.

I am not saying that you shouldn't use a K&N. All I am saying is that with a K&N there will be an air-flow difference. That may or may not require an adjustment.

I would suggest doing a search on K&N in this site and see what comes up.

I agree, K&N are wonderful filters. I use them in my Trailblazer and have used them in other vehicles. My Honda Nighthawk has one in it. And they all work great.

OK, now I am up to $.04 (grin)

Ride safe everyone. And have fun out there!!
