Cold starts with holding the throttle open a little. Runs rough for about a minute then it will idle by itself. Seems the idle is way low when its cold but speeds up to where I set it the last time it was warm. When I put the choke on, even slightly, the engine wants to instantly die. I suspect somethings still wrond because after the engine is warm, I rev to
3 or 4k rpm, put the choke on and can smell raw gas from the exhaust.

What bike is it?? Sounds like you need to get the pilot screws adjusted a little, the bike will run a little different when warm usually, also you probably will need to clean your pilot jets in the float chamber to allow fuel to flow when the butterflies are closed

Its an 82 650 Maxim. The bowls spent about 10 days in the carb/parts cleaner on 2 seperate times. Poked and prodded and aerosol carb cleaner sprayed through the jet atleast 20 times. Sprays through like the video somewhere on this site shows. I can't understand why the engine wants to die as soon as the choke is put on even the slightest amount. Also, the shi%cago city streets are causing a lot of squeaking in the suspension. I have gone about 40 miles on it so far and it runs good after its warmed up.

Forgot. Tried throttle chops today. 5k rmp for 30 sec then hit the off switch. All are between 3 to 3.25 turns out. Plugs still look white.
