I just purchased a 1983 Maxim 400. The previous owner has painted the gas tank, fenders, and valve cover - the rest of the bike is looking its age.

The tank/fenders are in glossy black - I am thinking of offsetting it by painting the (rather faded) headlight casing, instrument casing, side panels in matte olive drab. Question is - how do I paint the plastic with a durable matte finish (as I am assuming a clear-coat would add gloss to the finished product)?

Thanks in advance for any input you can offer...

    Mark.

thats an easy one.... use a matte clear coat. when using this be very carful to only use light coats, if you load it on it will come out glossy

I'm a fan of plastic primers. I clean my plastics with acetone then rinse and prime. After that a good top coat of color and then as suggested a Matte clear coat...

As stated THIN coats give the best results
