Hi I have resently joined and think this site is brillant. Ihave purchased a 1982 xj750 which has been sitting for 5 yrs without running and i think the clutch plates and friction plates are stuck. Is there any way of un sticking them without having to dissemble the clutch first. If anyone has any ideas could they please let me know. Thanks des

What makes you think the plates are stuck?
    Can't get it into gear?
    Can't pull in the clutch?
I'm going to wager your cable is sticking. Pull, clean and lubricate it (if this isn't the problem it will help anyway).
Pour in a couple of liters of Marvel Mystery oil, put the machine in gear (if you can) and rock it back and forth several times a day for a few days. Slosh that stuff around in the case to make sure it covers everything. You should see some results in a few days if the plates are stuck.
Humble opinion, pull the clutch apart. It is easy and the case gasket is cheap.
Let us know what you have done to determine your issue.
    Welcome to the gang.

Hi Robert thanks for the advice the other day. Parts not so cheap over hear and can be very hard to get so what I did was made sure I had the maximum travel of the clutch actuating arm that i could get from the clutch lever itself found a wide open space and started the old girl put it into second and took off. a little awkwardly at first but after a bit time clutch working fine.Went like a rocket, These bikes have a great sound dont they and such a comfortable ride. My next major task is going to replace the orginal fuse box with a blade fuse box as I think it wil be more reliable, as I also have one fuse that has been replaced with a in line replacement.
Again thanks for the welcome and the advice.

    Hi Des,

Welcome to the site. Where in NZ are you?

:) yeah, let the fly wheel do the job! That's the method I've used for years on cars. When I got my replacement XJ motor the clutch was "stuck". My old one was good so I took the opertunity to check both and use he better one. Made my own gasket as yes the prices here are crazy!
Bike is very quiet, people don't know I'm there untill I say "hello".
Replaced my fuse box and went over all the connections, opened the bar controls and cleaned all the contacts. Lots of green copper :) .

Good luck with the fuse box (many good tips here on XJBikes)and ride safe.

Mine is definately the other end of the scale.... noisy as

Oh and I have 4 or 5 650 clutches that would most likely fit your 750.

Let me know if you want one ;)

I'll bet your fourth unit is corroded, this happens frequently. Have a new bulb standing by to replace the old one.

I know you may have fixed the bike allredy but ill just post this for others with the same problem, on my XJ750 1981 it was sitting for about 5-10 years in that time the cluth plates got stuck together all I had to do was open the clutch separate all the plates and oil them , i put the bike back together and it worked for a short time then became stuck agen , so I started the bike pulled the clutch in ran along side the bike pushing it in (N)then jumped on and put it into 1st gear but kept the clutch pulled in and reved the bike over and over after about 4 mins the plates poped and was then working fine. don't know if this will help others but it worked for me.
