Can anyone shed some light on "automotive type spin-on oil filters" for the XJ?

    What's your question specifically?
There is a kit available to convert the XJ's from using the cartridge type filter to using a standard spin-on type filter.
If you do a search, you can probably find the whole thread on it.

The spin-on adapter thread is "sticky" in the XJ Chat forum, so it's at the top. I'm not sure on the original source for the adapters, but Chacal might have them in stock. I'm considering one myself.

Chacal - got some prices for us?

exactly that, what it looks like, thanks, Polock, the original housing is an integral part of the engine, aesthetically speaking, ergo, better performance or ease of maintainence should be significantly enhanced to warrant the transition.
Having been there & done that, what do you think?

first off let me say this is a homemade one, not the one chacal sells, although
they can't be much different since they do the same thing
to install it just screw a pipe in the engine, nice and tight with thread locker
put a big o-ring on the back of the adapter, slide it over the pipe and tighten down a big nut (30mm)
now you have the same setup as a car oil filter
you might be able to do it with the pipes on but i doubt it, better to take them off
takes a oil filter socket to remove the filter, replace with fingers, takes about a minute to do, oil changes might drip ten drops
oil filters are common, i forget the number
i like it, i'd do it again
