'82 XJ650 Maxim. I pulled the pilot screw brass plugs out of my carbs today... I used my father-in-laws drill press set to stop about 1/8" down from the top of the plugs, then used a drywall screw and a crescent wrench and they popped right out... The screws look great & turn really easy!
Now to my question. Do these settings seem correct ???
Carb 1 set to 2 & 7/8 turns out from stop.
Carb 2 set to 3 & 3/4 turns out from stop.
Carb 3 set to 1 & 1/4 turns out from stop.
Carb 4 set to 1 & 7/8 turns out from stop.
I bought this scooter new in '83 and I'm sure they've never been adjusted. Been sitting in my garage since '87.
Just seems like those are large variences?
And what is the best way to know when they are set correctly?
    Thanks, Eric

How does it run and what do the plugs look like? My experiance is that the factory setings are alittle lean so most of us would have it alittle on the rich side which is always better than lean. Check the thread on old school carb cleaning Rick Co Matic and colour tuning.

I haven't attempted to start it yet. My float valves and seats will arrive this week. The last time it ran was in 1987, doh... I've read all the posts on this site I can find, been going through ricks clean your carb articles.

    Eric,

It's not at all unusual for the pilot screw factory settings to be all over the place. The manufacturer tunes to meet emission standards and the bikes usually end up set lean.

I had an '82 XJ650 I bought new and the factory settings ranged from less than 1 turn to about 3 turns out.

On a second '82 XJ650 I picked up used, the settings were all very close (within a half turn). I'm pretty sure those were the set at the factory because I had to remove the brass plugs to get to the screws.

I got my new pilot screw o-rings washers and springs from chacal. So when I replace my screws do I want to use my factory counts (from 1st post) as my initial settings?
I've polished my CV pistons with 1500 wet/dry, now what is the best lube to use on them?
What is the procedure to setting the float heights?

I'd start them where the factory had them and work from there.

Interestingly I pulled apart the carbs from a 2002 GSX600F Katana. Plugs still in them, no indication they've ever been touched. Mixture screws (L-R) were at 2, 2 1/4, 0, 0.
