Hi all, located in the uk i'm thinking for my general use, 2 up touring, long distance commuting and London town work the xj900f will be better and probably more economic than vx800, gt550/gt750, gs850g, gtr1000 etc.

So my q is, what year/model is best? I would be looking to carry a big givi setup of luggage and a big touring fairing etc (will probably have to firm up both ends a lot and brace arm/forks) to beat the bmw's, probably powerbronze voyager fairing, I'm tall too and dislike wet/wind.

What is my ideal xj, would a diversion be better or any other bike for that matter?

    Greg

Not terribly familiar with the models available to you Brits, but I would wager that your better served with whatever model fits you best. Given distance and passengers, comfort would be very high on my list of desirable attributes. A 900 may even be a hair too small for you.

A site for XJ bikers and I can't find anyone who knows which XJ900 is the best version!!! I'm so shocked ;-)

I have an old GPz305 - if anyone needs to know which version of that is best just let me know!

    Hi!
I don't think that theres a big difference between XJ900 model of the 80's, specially since you are going for a touring fairing. There was an increase in displacement (app.+50ccm) round '85.
IMHO XJ900 is one of the most reliable and durable bikes ever built.
XJ900's will easily run 100K miles without any serious engine repairs if it is driven correctly. We all know that XJ-models are more touring and less race.
    The models
    Typ 31A..Bj. 1983-84
    Typ 58L..Bj. 1985-1990
    Typ 4BB.. Bj. 1991-94
And there's a german site about them here www.xj-ig.de/xj900.htm

Thanks very much, I guess just the newer the better then. I'll get a translator on that site!

    Cheers, Greg.

Best is a matter of your perspective. Newer isn’t necessary better.

To translate you can use http://babelfish.altavista.com/
Under Translate a Web page, Enter URL, select from-to languages and hit Translate :p

Fair point - but what was better about the original version with the handlebar mounted fairing that caused some issues and the smaller cc engine? Am I wrong in thinking they just got better?
