Just wandered in from another forum where a member gave me this site. I was given (yes, free) this bike last week and have been in search of some info. I belive it's an 81' XJ550 Seca SN: 000458

Looks like a great site here. I'm always impressed by the amount of knowledge that can be found on these forums.

Last winter I restored a 74' Honda CB350F and have been riding it since the spring.

Looks like this might be my next project:

I spend a lot of time over on a SOHC4 Honda forum so I may not be around much on this one. When I get around to wrenching on this Yamaha I'll be sure to hang out with some annoying "what is this" questions :D

    Matt.

    Hi Bushman, welcome.
    I have rebuilt a1978 Honda CB750 F2 and just recently a 1980 XJ650.
The XJ was much more fun and I am keeping it.

You have to love free bikes. The closest I got was an offer for a 1980 Midnight Maxim 850 in about the same shape for $700 not running. You have a gem there.

    Thanks for the replies :)

I'm getting exited seeing just how many parts are available out there for this machine (ebay).

The first thing I plan to do is see how the PO treated the engine. Once I get it running and see how tight it is I'll know roughly what my buget is for this build.

Here's a pic of my last build:

New paint, seat cover, tyres, etc... polished the covers and rebuilt the engine with a new Web camshaft and some generous porting on the exhaust side.

Oh man, you gotta love the CB....my roomate just bought one to restore...that'll be my next bike for sure. (I WILL be keeping the XJ).

Wizard, your XJ 650 has the shiniest engine i've seen on an XJ...how did you accomplish that?

Great job on the 350, Bushman. I love the way the headers sweep across.

Hey guys, if I'm not mistaken, I'm seeing a YICS emblem on the crank cover. Wouldn't that make it an '82 or newer?

    Yup, it says YICS there.

    The frame says "12/80" so that's why I thought it's an 81.
