ok, so I keep running across some articles on the intertubes about using blackstrap molasses (or treacle) as a rust removal agent. Supposedly if you mix it with a bit of hot water, it works every bit as good if not better than muriatic or phosphoric acid.

Has anyone tried this? If not, I'm going to! :-D

I used a product called Rusteco. Its expensive but works well and doesn't eat parts like aluminun and chrome. PainterD turned me onto boiling carb parts in lemmon juice. Makes aluminum look like new.

I tried it in my tank last year.... some say the had success, I had less than stellar results.... removed a little of the rust , not all, but also left a residue behind that was just as big of a pain to get rid of.....

I had best results with electrolysis followed by phosphoric acid. Electrolysys broke the bond of any larger scaling, and the acid, cleaned up what was left...

I've had great success removing rust and shining up chrome by filling a squirt bottle with Coca-Cola, apply liberally to the affected area, then scrub with bunched up tin foil. Then fill another squirt bottle with water to rinse. Works pretty well, - AND - it'll smell good too.

I bought 4 bottles of lemon juice. Poured it into a deep pan like for meat loaf and boiled it straight up on the back yard BBQ grill side burner. once boiling I dropped in my carb bodys and float bowls. All the junk that was stuck on them came to the top. I kept skimming it off and after about 20 min or so I pulled them out and rinsed well and blew out right away. The aluminum looks like brand new. Lemmon juice is a mild acid and cleans as well as carb dip but with out runing the seals on the throttle shafts. The carb jets turn black so don't put your brass in there. I'm looking for some silver cleaner that will shine those up. More later.

At work i use SCN-9194 by Nalco. Dont know if it is available at the consumer level, it is a MIRACLE for cast iron, neutral pH, works at room temp with no damage to aluminum or the base metal, but it is a rust eater.
