Hi guys, I replaced my chain on my 550 last season, and never really rode it. Now I have been riding a lot and I checked my chain and it was very loose on the sprocket - I could lift it off almost a half to a full length. I adjusted accordingly. Is this normal? Will I have to adjust soon again, or not for a while?

Usually when a chain wears out the sprockets need to be replaced too. If you don't the new chain wears prematurely.

When I changed the chain it was when I went to get it safetied I was told to change it (or else I could not get it to pass) but the guy never said I had to change the sprocket...

on our race machines (MX quads) we have been running the pre-stretched chain, and it really doesnt stretch at all....i had one chain all of last season, and kept it as a good spare for this season. the chain was barely showing signs of wear, other than the xrings cracking. i change sprockets much more often than chains. of course this is on quads, not street bikes, but its all the same chain and sprockets.

Chains 'stretch' initially because the pressure injected grease (in the roller pins) gets squeezed out in use ( O- ring chains do this markedly less because of the O Rings Dohh .. they are there to keep the lube in and the grit out.
Lube it, adjust it and be happy 'regular' chains are Really cheap.. Sprockets not so (I also suggest you leave Aluminum sprockets in the store) .need to be replaced when worn. But..diagnosing 'wear' accurately is what seperates the men from the boys and the 'safe' route is to replace all bits.. assuming you don't have better things to do with yer $$

IMO a prestreched chain is a Pre damaged one :) All the lube has been pre-squeezed out. can't see the point of this on anything other than a competetive race only machine .. that has too loooong a chain run issues

I wore out my first cheapo chain in about 2K miles. It was stretched to the max. Then I switched to an o-ring chain (Regina) and so far I had to adjust it only once (3K+ miles later). I just clean it with a brush and some rubber-safe carb cleaner every once in a while and re-coat it with chain lube.

I use Bel-Ray chain lube... it dries to the point where it still lubricates, but does not sling off. Not expensive either.
