I'm thinking of putting individual air filters on the bike, and am not sure if I need a 50 mm. or 52 mm. My bike is a 1980 XJ650, and the OD of the carb air intakes are 50 mm. (measured with my micrometer), but have seen some spec. somewhere that suggested a 52 mm. air filter pod. With these individual filters, did you have to change the main jets? I'm not changing the stock exhaust (at this time anyhow).

Also, when replacing the airbox with these individual pods, what do you do with the crankcase breather tube? I was thinking of putting a fuel filter in the end, and just resting it somewhere? What have you done?

Thanks for the help everyone, man I'm sure glad to have found this site!!

Pods were covered in many threads. Use the Forum Search and you'll find these topics. I believe there is even a poll regarding re-jetting because of the increased air intake. Yes, I know that didn't answer your questions but hopefully someone more technical can jump in :)

Well I don't know about the pod size issue but I do know of one bike that did not have to rejet after installing pods. I didn't look into the carbs and see stock jets so I have some doubts but nonetheless he did tell me that they were stock. You will have to retune with a colortune plug to get it to run right. If it doesn't then it will require rejetting. You could PM "shadowhawk" and ask him if he rejetted when he had his pods on. I have never asked him what he did on his 650.
For the breather hose you can attach a crankcase breather filter which is fairly cheap from dennis kirk. They work in both directions of flow which is what you need. They have a chrome caseing so they look good too.

I used 52mm pods I got off ebay. Unless you have a colortune (or exhaust analyzer), as well as a sync tool, I would not suggest it. You will need to rejet if you put the pods on, expecially if you have an aftermarket exhaust. I say "need" because you'll want it to run CORRECTLY throughout the throttle. The only way to do this is to rejet. Don't be scared of rejetting, though - that is the easy part. The hard part is getting your bike to run once you put the carbs back on. It does make it a whole lot easier to get at your carbs and such w/o that stock air box. If you have the tools and the know-how, it shouldn't take too long to get them dialed in, just realize the mixes are most likely going to be waaay off. Fortunately for me, BlueMaxim is the man and he got mine pretty synced after an all-day affair. I had filth issues, though.... :)

btw: the 82 runs HSC32's. you can check if yours are the same on the xjcd or owners manual.

Just to clarify. I am not the man, I am just one of the guys. Any of those other guys at the carb clinic could have set your carbs. Rex, Gary, Frank, Steve, all have done work on their bikes that I haven't. Rex has experience with pods where I am an idiot with them, Gary has split the cases on his Maxim X and replaced gears, Frank recovered his own seat, where I paid someone and of course Steve's orange XJ speaks for itself.
I appreciate the compliment and was very delighted to get your bike going. Truth is we all enjoy our bikes and helping others. That is exactly why Rex started the NTCC and Gary Steve & Frank have been there 2 years now. Remember that Steve doesn't even own an XJ now and he hosted! I am very proud to be associated with these guys and of the work we have done. But it ain't just me!

my bike is unjetted and will remain so until i win the lottery  if it didnt run so good the jets would be a higher priority...for my oil breather im using a cheapie chrome intimidator from advance auto parts...its 9.98, i found runnin it directly off of the case got oil all over that general area so i attached it to a tube and zip-tied it up around the pods...this was done after my last oil change

the last pic in there shows the breather prior to my oil change

    good luck!

I actually had foam pods (by UNI) running on mine before the ebay ones. The bike ran fine (just a little lean, but that could have been adjusted out with mixture screws) before I put the K&N knockoffs on. Apparently, the cotton filters flow more than the foam ones, cuz it wouldn't even idle with the cottons. Soooooo lean.
btw: rejet kit was $106 w/shipping and all from mawonline.
You can get the foam pods through JC whitney for like $40 bucks I think. Like I said, you'll probably be ok w/o a rejet if you use the foam pods.

From the pic, that's what it looks like thedude is running, but I'm not positive. Good luck.
