don't do as i did. cleaned them again, bike ran worse. thinking that i have an electrical problem, i checked the coils, ok. still missing at mid rpm. pull carbs again. i pulled all the float bowls off, then flipped the rack over. i noticed one float hanging lower than the rest. i thought i broke the little tab for adj. the float level. nope, just installed it upside down!! what a maroon! now i can ride!

Yeah, they actually look "better" upside down. Common mistake.

Yeh, when I got to putting back #4 it didn't look right, I ended up taking them all off again just to check!

Just how do you install a float upside down? I'm assuming this is what you did as the tab for adjusting the float height is attached to it. Or am I just thick?

I plead guilty as well... Did it my last rebuild. You'd think after having them apart 3 times, I would have been ok.

Just out of curiosity does anyone have a pic of what they are supposed to look like? I took mine apart and cleaned them tonight and put them back exactly the way they came apart but I just want to make sure the last person who did it did it right.... cause they were amazingly clean....

Don't know what kind of carbs or floats you guys are talking about. But it is impossible for me to install my floats upside down. Either I would have to force the float bowls down on the carb body, or they would simply look wrong before I even attempted to install the float bowls. I have an XJ550 with the Mikuni carbs.

OK, now you guys are making me paranoid.
I just bought a non-running Maxim and I rebuilt the carbs. It starts now but it is really running rich and now I'm wondering if I put the floats in wrong. Ugggg.....
