    Odd problem...

My exhaust is ticking? Like someone tapping a screwdriver on the can while I'm riding. I have just adjusted the valves - all within spec, when it started.

Any ideas? Thinking it has to be valve related but how I don't know.

I have a similar sounds. and I know that there are a couple of holes in my exhast collector. I have tried to ensure that everything is tight, but I would also bet that the chrome trim on teh collector is "rattling" at certain frequencies giving that sound... or one or two clamps.

Does it go away at different rpm's ?

My Bike leaks at the muffler gaskets and makes a ticking sound. I want to pull my pipes off and get them either re chromed or I'm thinking Jet Hot might be the ticket. Riding seaon is here so I don't want to be without the exhaust unitll there is snow on the ground.

After removing and reinstalling my exhaust after engine work, I got the ticking also. One of the exhaust studs snapped long ago, and that connection wasn't as tight as it could be. Loosened all the studs, retightened securely, and the ticking has disappeared.

My assumption is that the ticking signifies a leak in your exhaust (before the muffler). Whether it's an actual hole, or just a loose connection to the engine.

As for what the actual ticking is, maybe it's the valve closing?

I have had the exhaust off recently. I'll try pulling it and reinstalling.

    I'll post my results.

did you put the donut gaskets back in, i forgot just the other day and i was worried because i heard a ticking, have the bike running and run your hand near the exhaust, see if you can feel any air escaping, thats how i found it... out the donut gaskets in and tightened the nuts down before and after each time i rode a few times and its completely gone.

Donuts are in. Maybe a tightening is all that I need.

Tighten each one no more than a quarter turn at a time then take the bike out. Do not over tighten any that don't want to move. I had this and it did my head in for weeks until I got to the bottom of it.
