I bought my 1981 XJ 750 RH Seca a few months ago with 19000 miles. It's a very clean bike and everything worked well. Then on the way home from a 40 mile ride the gear selection became really difficult. It's hard to find 1st gear while downshifting, takes several kicks to get second gear (with lots of missed shifts), sometimes pops out of third gear. I removed the left side cover and peeped inside looking for bits from the chain guide. Found nothing unusual. The clutch adjustment seems fine. The bike has never been dropped on the selector. Of course I'm hoping the problem isn't internal. Any ideas?

Have you tried adjusting the selector? If it is adjusted to far then it will contact the engine when upshifting and not allowing a firm gear transition.

The gear selector looks OK. Doesn't seem to be contacting the engine case when it travels forward. I haven't tried adjusting it though. A couple things I did before the problem started: oiled the adjuster mechanism outside the engine case and changed the engine oil and filter. I don't know what type of oil was in the engine when I bought it but I used a good grade of diesel rated 15w 40. Then 20 miles later this problem started. Coincidence? :?:
