Hey guys, Been riding my little 400xs for a couple of months now, and I've noticed that my RPM's are running kinda high. When I get her into 5th, and I'm around 100Kmh or 60 Mph, I'm reving around 6300 or so. Is this the normal range or do I need to adjust the carbs?
    Thanks Mac

Don't think the carbs have anything to do with it. Your tach may be not working right. Does it sound like its running that high? Not sure how to check your tach for accuracy.

Engine RPM to wheel speed are fixed and should not change unless your clutch is slipping or the wheel size has changed. Did you change your back tire lately and does it feel like the clutch could be slipiing with a load on it at that speed.
My clutch would slip in the higher gears, the RPMs would go up and the bike would not move with the RPMS. Get it in high gear at a lower speed and pull the throttle open and see when you get into your power band if seems like the clutch is slipping.

Get someone in a nice car to pace you at 100, or use a GPS.
Testing your tach for accuracy can be done off of a high end timing light, or other equipment at a shop, but they might want to charge you.

Adjusting the carbs won't change the "ratio" between the speedo, and the tach.

That doesn't really sound that high for the xs400 at 60mph.

That's about what my 80' xs400 would run when I had it. If you are uncomfortable with that high of RPMs you can change out the rear sprocket. I considered it but instead I just got a new bike. It could also be a malfunctioning tach or speedo but I bet there both right on.

Thanks guys for the quick responses, was starting to think that I was running too high. It just seemed to be winding out pretty high at the 60 mph mark. By the way if any of the other 400 xs guys are reading this, I liked to see how many revs your bike gets up to at around the 60-70 mph mark.
    Cheers again, Mac
