I have a used 1982 XJ1100 that I just got.. It has less than 16k on it. After a few days of simple cleaning since it had been parked for 3 years. I now have it running. Now when I try to go it makes a grinding noise but only under a load. I can shift through all the gears fine while up on the stand. And even apply the rear brake and it seams to be fine. But when I try and ride it even up the small hill in my driveway it will not go. I thought maybe there was a slide gear not fully engaging because it had sat so long. But I have run it up on the stand enough now to have gotten it lubricated well enough I think.

I assume you changed the oil. Did you flush the oil? Search the threads, there are a lot of instructions on how to flush and clean out bikes that have sat. Can you tell where the noise is coming from? Does the engine rev but you don't go (clutch slipping?)?

The Oil is clean and the cltch seems ok. It sounds like it's comming from the final drive area where the pinion gear would be to transfer to the drive shaft.

Just sorted a similar problem, where the drive shaft fits into the bevel box it looks like a large socket that is held in place with a nut with a spring on it, well that had sheared off. Funny thing was it would make a bit of noise when setting off but would still drive the bike ok.
