I've searched and searched - there is lots of info, but either its too vague, or a such a severe custom job that there is massive welding and fabricating involved...

I have a '82 XJ750 Seca (pic in gallery) that I am working on - once I get it running (fingers crossed, should be getting carb pats in next few days) there are some mods I want to do..opinions would be helpful ;-)

I like the gas tank, going to strip that and paint it nice nice, already working on rust removal from inside. Probably going to go with Chacal's fuel shutoff petcock replacement, as the petcock i have is shot... Turning the fuel on and off will remind me of my first bike ;-)

I am not fond of 'square', so the headlight, fog light, and instrument panel are the first to go ;-), anyone recommend bolt on round replacements for the lamps?? and whats a good round (or dual round) replacement instrument panel that would fit this bike with a minimal amount of fabrication, rewiring etc...

Also, heard talk of cutting the back springs to drop the back end a few inches.. I would love to do that, but I am 230lbs and not sure if that would cause it to bottom out....?

Want to do something with the back fender, kinda like the look of the maxim fender (EBAY) - how much of a pain is it to fix that in? (They have em on ebay all the time for pretty cheap) - obviously that includes changing the taillight - any issues encountered with that??

I love some of the ideas floating around regarding saddle bags, luggage etc... First question, how do I get a luggage rack on this bad boy? Any aftermarket parts that are bolt on and go? or do I make a friend with a welder and hope for the best?

Hopefully I want to get it running and on the road this year.. Then over the winter I want to strip EVERYTHING off the bike and get the frame blasted and coated... umm.. how much of a PITA is that going to be?? (i.e, not worth it...??).. its got some surface rust, and there is a small hole in the frame that needs a welding patch (nothing major)....

a lot of questions - just getting exciting about getting the bike running and making it 'mine' ;-)

    any and all info appreciated!!!

    thanks!!

Josh, the cluster off of an 82 650 Maxim should be the ticket for you to swap out your instrument cluster. This next part I'm not 100% sure on. If you can swing it, get the headlight assembly as well and be sure to get the mounting brackets. I'm not sure about the mounting on the triple clamps but it shouldn't be a major issue. Will someone please chime in on this part?

I believe you're going to run into some additional problems (even assuming the gauge mounts fit properly or with a minimum of fabrication) with the wiring harness and sensors, which are designed for the "computer" dash as original. What types of issues, I'm not sure, but "issues" will arise..........

You bring up a very important point Chacal, I omitted to mention the sensors. One would either have to rig up an additional panel or simply by-pass the computer sensors entirely.

When it comes to electrical and all that, I don't mind playing around and coming up with a creative solution ;-) (actually thinking of some things now...... seperate sensor panel in a custom housing ...hmmm...

But when it comes to welding and all that... then i get wary ;-)

I'm often amazed at the variety of threshold levels we all have. You're happy to dive into an electrical solutions, but wary of welding. I'm perfectly happy to weld away, but should a problem get into chasing an electrical problem and I'm extremely ambivalent. Given that, my current electrical problems seem especially annoying, but I'm getting off post.

If only we were in the same town and could draw on each other's resources. PainterD for tank finishing, Chacal for parts sourcing and general know-how, and on and on.

Came on the bike when I purchased it 2 weeks ago...and I believe were stock when it was purchased origianlly. I love the utility of the boxes, as I've got gear I need to tote around daily, but I really like the looks of a bare bike much more. I'm still a little mixed as to what to do. The PO said getting the boxes off was a real drag, so I'm taking a wait-n-see approach for now.

As long as I can pick your brain when I have a question? I hate being a newb at anything, but it sure helps having good resources- the easier to access the better. Now, if I could only get my EE neighbor interested in motorcycles and have you as a resource then I'd really be smokin'.

And to be fair, you have an awesome amount of information availble in your parts guides. I just have to take the time to read it. I'm gonna have to figure out how to set up a laptop in the shop, so that I can read online and have the bike there for reference. My wife is really going to love this.

I have to say that I've thought about it, but it seems a shame, as my understanding is that there are very few of these bikes that came this way from the dealer. And, of course, I've yet to ride as a daily driver (Rider), so I really can't judge how I'll feel about it when I do get on the road full-time.

If I do decide to sell the gear, I'll definintely keep your interest in mind.

how would this gauge work on the xj750 seca?

    EBAY

It at least adds 'some' roundness to the cluster, and looks like its got all the 'sensors' and whatnot ;-)

It would not be a simple swap over, I'm sure it would work but you would have to modify the wiring.
The seca has a "computer" looking at different switches which the ebay gauge set does not have.
The gauage on ebay also has a voltage? guage which the seca does not.
