Replace the starter clutch? Not terribly expensive to rebuild either. Just got to pull the motor or do open heart surgery. Bite the bullet and dig in, finish line is in sight.

    Darkangel,

My starter clutch ate it too. Turned out some screws had come loose and locked the whole thing. My parts from Chacal have just arrived and I hope to put it back together in the next few days.

Background - Other than a 3 months Auto course over 15 years ago I have no background in mechanics. I haven't seen anything to scare me off yet and the engine is in as many pieces as you could manage. So I can let you know how it all goes for a beginner in the next couple of weeks.

If you have a little time and a lot of patience you'll be sweet. I have not a lot of either but I'm having a crack anyway ;)

With those low miles on the bike, the Starter Clutch might not be shot.
It might need be to be douched-out and cleaned of whatever sludge or ugliness that is keeping it from engaging.

Before giving up on it and starting a major tear-down ... I'd roll the dice and see if a major douching-out freed it up. There's no guarantee that the Starter Clutch ain't fried or that this will work to clean it. But, before I'd start taking that Engine down, I'd give it a shot because the odds are 50-50.

What I'd do looks something like this!

    Gallon of solvent
    Garden-style Pump Sprayer
    Drain Oil; Pull Filter
    Leave the Drain Plug out
    Pull Starter
Empty drained oil from drain pan and position drain pan to collect solvent.
    Fill Pump Sprayer with Solvent.
    Pull Starter Motor
    Pump-up Sprayer
Insert the wand of the Sprayer into the Engine as close to the Starter Clutch as you can get it.
Spray the solvent in there and hope.

Let the final drops of solvent drain from the engine into the drain pan.
    Clean-up
    Button-up
    Oil it
Put the Starter back in and say a little prayer.

    Good luck.
You deserve a break and I hope this does the trick.
I got my fingers crossed for you!
