The shaft drive must go. What are my options for swingarms?

I have an 82 seca 750 with shaft drive that I'd like to get rid of. I'm also selling the engine which runs fine if anybody wants it. Are there any swingarm swaps because I'm new to this bike?

 

Why would you want to get rid of the shaft drive?

 

Getting rid of your shaft drive? Maybe if you were making a go-kart or a hovercraft.

You want to convert the bike to something other than Shaft Drive?

You need a Magic Marker and a large piece of cardboard.

Use the Magic Marker and write: "For Sale" on the cardboard.

Take the money you get from selling the bike and buy a Chain Drive!

 

If the engine and shaft are for sale. Are you going electric?

 

Thank you for the colorful comments everybody. I was going to convert the bike to electric but have since decided to swap in a smaller engine, possibly 150cc-200cc. I got the bike for $250 running with a clear title so why not make it into a higher gas mileage project. I would even like to consider swapping out the forks for something a little newer. If you have any ideas or constructive input please respond away. I understand this entails a lot of fabrication know-how. These bikes however in stock form go for very little and are not very attractive so I would like to make this Yamaha something better than it is.

I came to the "modification" portion of the XJ Enthusiast website. If the XJ is so great then I suppose a "modification" forum would not be needed. Alas, every forum website has a modification forum because it is our nature to take what is ours (a mass produced bike in this case) and make it our own. I also called the bike unattractive...not ugly. If I thought it was ugly, without potential, I would not have bought it. The bike is 26 years old and not a collectors piece so I say lets put together ideas on how this bike can be updated and a little more attractive.

The "rebel 250" honda gets 104 MPG on the back roads,and you can put a 200 CC motor in an old XJ frame and do better.

I'm interested in getting the best MPG around.

Yeah reelop, where do you live? I too would donate to the 100mpg XJ fund. And I could use your engine for my 100mph project or the hovercraft I plan on building since the promise of flying cars has little chance of happening.

 

You payed 250 il give you 350 for the hole thing.

I thought that was only on the 1100 because the middle drive gear housing is seperate from the rest of the crankcase - therefore can be modified to convert to chain drive? I could be wrong and correct me if I am - because I would love a chain drive conversion to run a wider tire.

I'm from Ft. Myers, FL and will ship the engine for 250-300 shipped if you're in the states. I believe Canada would cost more.

 

You might be able to use a chain setup from a 550 maxim/seca or maybe even radian. I'm sure they will be close but maybe not a bolt in.

Im looking at a '61 Caddy.....gonna convert it to a GEO. :twisted:

 

Good luck on that. I'd suggest going to a GEO metro as apposed to a geo tracker because the tracker is more of a jeep styled vehicle. You should get much better gas mileage too.

 

did i read this right..... a chain set up from a triumph fits on an xj1100?

 

+1 on the Metro. The Tracker is far too top heavy and the short wheelbase will be even more of a rollover risk with the V8 and ginormous tailfins.

 

Oh...I was thinking of just swapping out the hood emblems....silly me..

 

Motorcycles don't have hoods....thus no hood emblem to switch out.

 

I'm thinking about getting robot legs. It's a risky operation but I think it could be worth it..
