I'm in need of a battery cover for an 82' xj750 maxim.

Anyone know a good place to find one online or happen to have one for sale?

Ebay is a good place to find parts.
Or you could check local salvage yards.

There's a cycle yard in Milwaukee, WI, that had a set of covers on ebay a few weeks ago. Don't see it on there, noticed the auction arond the 22nd of May, May still have some, just beaware, they were expensive, the side covers are getting very rare, so of course price keeps going up.

Thanks for the heads up on this auction, I managed to win :)

Your right about the price on these, 128.00$ for little bit of metal and plastic but well worth it to have my bike complete again.

How hard would it be for someone to cast a few new ones and who would you petition to do it?

I was thinking the same thing myself. I'm not sure about having them cast in metal but I have to imagine making a mold and casting them in a high density plastic wouldn't be extremely difficult.

    Fiberglass perhaps or HDPE?

Might well be the only after market version of that piece in existance....can't say i've seen any in all my searching.

It seems like a pretty complicated little piece. It would be awesome to have a source for these, mine is missing as well. It's always funny to see a set selling on ebay. The left never sells for much but the right fetches huge money. :(

Seems to be that there is a considerable demand for these puppies.

I've got Monday off work...I'll make some phone calls and do some research on this. There are at least 4 companies that I know of in this area that will do custom injection molding with varying sorts of plastics.

If a mold can't be made these certainly aren't too complex to draw up in CAD and have dye tooled. Depending on the initial overhead it might be an interesting little business venture for a very niche market.

They wouldn't be metal/plastic like the original but considering how rare these are, would anyone care if they were just solid plastic?

I am in the process now in making a vacum mold machine. They are not that hard to make. When i get it done I will use my side cover as a template and try to make some. I will keep you all posted.

    Sounds great!

In making a few phone calls today I wasn't able to get much progress. One "we don't do that sort of thing", one "i'd have to get back to you" and the third wanted me to come by with the side cover because he had no clue what I was talking about...even after describing it at some length.

    Keep us posted ctraugh

I wonder if/when they're going to start disappearing off parked bikes.

Not sure, time to find a better locking screw to make it harder to remove

Sorry ;) I always kept mine under a locked cover when it overnighted outside. Just to keep honest people honest, ya know.
