My speedometer works, but only reads about 35mph when acually going 60! It works smoothly...just incorrectly. I removed the cable and speedo box from the front wheel and regreased and remounted them, but did not help. I have now idea what could cause that. The tach works fine and accurately, but I understand that those are separate systems. What should I try?

Have you had the speedometer opened up yet ? I went into mine on the 650G the other day to repair the tripmeter. Didn't look to very complicated, maybe it has some corrosion causing resistance?

You would probably get a better response if you told us what bike it was on and what you have done so far.

And, most likely a lot of us are out riding this nice weekend??

Ok here you go, First things first, Clear off the dinning room table.
You need to pull the complete speedo/Tach off. Remove the screws on the back and pull the back off. You will need to remove the screws that hold the meter cover on. Once the face plate is off. You will need to remove the brace that goes across the back. Once removed you can take the screws out that hold the speedo in place. You then can pull the speedo out of the housing. Note: there are wires for the indicator lights and such that will need to be removed also. Draw a diagram of how these go.
So the speedo is sitting on the table in front of you now. Inspect the rear if it. You will notice that when you move the needle there is a little bearing that the back side of the shaft goes into. Lube it with light machine oil, lube the other side also where the needle goes through the face plate. That should take care of that part. Check the gear drive that spins the odometer. The grease is most likely dryed out too. I like to use a light lube like white lubraplate. Just go over the whole thing if it moves lube it. When you go to put it back togeather you might as well change the light bulbs. Since its a pain to get at them after its all togeather you might as well pop for some new bulbs. Clean the inside of the front cover. Take some computer canned air and blow any dust out of the houseing. When you go to put it back on the bike. Pull the speedo cable out and lube it with the white grease. The idea here is to get some lube where the last person did back in the factory 26 years ago . Not as bad as carb cleaning but will take a few hours and a few asprins. Good Luck

I'll get on that asap. I appreciate your reply! I have a 1982 xj750 maxim.

I have pulled the speedo gear off the front wheel and lubed and reassembled the unit. It did not help. I also removed the lubed the speedometer cable. Thanks
