I am confused and hoping that y'all can straighten me out.

My '82 XJ650 has a 3.5 gallon tank on it. I found this out by running out of gas after just 130 some miles and only being able to put 3.5 gals in.

What I know of the specs state that it should be 5 gal tank. I am also told that the 550 3.5 gal tank is physically shorter. So how is it that a 3.5 gal tank would fit properly on an 82 650?

And, can I how do I check to be certain I can put a proper 5 gal tank on my bike and have it fit?

    Thanks,

    Mike

The 750 has a 5 gallon tank and the 650 has a 3.5 on the Maxim and a 3.3 on the Seca. However the 750 tank will bolt right on a 650 Maxim. The Seca's tanks will not interchange.

Yup, my Maxim starts to hit the reserve at right around 95-100 miles (2.2 gallons). My screen may be a bit dirty but it is predictable.

They will interhcange, the 650 Seca tank is a straight bolt on fit to the 550, but because of the extra length the seat will have to be modified or changed

Caution: The SECA gas tank will not interchange with the maxim. They are a little bit longer.
