ok ... well first off my bike seems to be running at a good idle with the choke on at about 1/4 way, and i cant bring the choke down all the way or it will die or sound like a knock and not enough fuel.

Now for acceleration .... when i go through the gears the bike kinda bogs a lil in the beginning of the gear like its too much fuel maybe? im not sure. its like a heavy load is on the eninge and it cant keep up, and i feel if i pull the throtle more than a lil bit it will have too much fuel.

if any of this make sense please help me out, and if the carbs should be adjusted for idle and such can ya help me??

    thanx

The bike, once warm, should idle @ 1050 with no enrichment.

Sounds to me like you are rich. Try running some plug chops, or using a colortune to get your mixtures right.
At this point sync the carbs.
Then guess what....Repeat all over again until the bike runs like a jet fighter.

If you need choke to idle warm your pilot circuit is lean. Make sure it's clean and set the mixture.

A see though spark plug - allows you to see the color of the combustion.

Umm...guys..."first bike" and 46K miles? Inno, my friend; how long have you had this bike? Right off the top, it sounds like a classic case of XJ "carburetors need attention" syndrome. BUT: Could be as simple as a plugged (or missing, I always like that one) air filter, a serious need for fresh spark plugs, missing or damaged cap on one of the vacuum fittings on the intake boots, cracked all the way thru intake boot(s) or grubby carburetors. Carbs need to be cleaned and kept that way, but there is no sense trying to do any serious tuning without first being sure your valve clearances (shims) are within specs. At 46K I'd look there first, can't tweak the carbs if the valves are way off...and can't tweak dirty carbs at all. You need a shop manual or the XJ CD and some reasonably inexpensive tools. A colortune is in your DISTANT future but a waste until many other things have been addressed.

Pulled the plugs this morning and theyre blacken'd, no oil on them. Air filter is present and is brand spanking new, no damage on it (thank you P.O.), and the intake boots appear to be ok from what i see so far. As far as the carbs are concerned ... what now? the tank has a lil crap in it, no rust, and i guess maybe things are a lil clogged but then why would i have TOO MUCH fuel if things are clogged? maybe i would wana remove the tank to drain and clean?

    ugh ... help, XJ-911
