Is it typical to see a small leak when switch from reserve to primary after a fill up?

It didn't leak after the switch, but I could see, smell, and feel gas as I changed it.

No, the petcock should not leak. Sounds like you have a seal that's probably getting old. I'd pick up a rebuild kit from chacal in the near future and rebuild them. It's VERY easy to do and not expensive.

OK, sorry to be ignorant, what is chacal? I have seen this on here, and cannot figure it out. I need a rebuild for the petcock as well,

    Geoff.

Chacal is the local parts guru. If you need it, chances are he has it.

One of the nice things about having a old(er) bike is that most of the common failures are well known. I should know this, but I continue to be surprised.

Natch-- Petcock rebuild kit-- one more thing. Since I've ordered from Chacal twice already (and only owned my bike for 4 weeks) I believe I'll wait a bit and order my next XJ bits when I have a collection of pieces. Unless catastrophic failure is right around the bend. Do these fail catastrophically? I do have the drip when changing positions, but no regular leak on primary...

I hope by switching to primary you guys mean "ON" and not "PRI" (prime).

"PRI" setting should be used only to fill the float bowls after servicing the carburetors. Otherwise it should be set to "ON" or "RES".

And no, it shouldn't leak when turning it. If it is the gasket behind the fuel cock (the part that turns) is probably worn out. You don't need the full rebuild. Just that gasket and the o-ring that seals the fuel cock to the valve body.

...to snipe this thread, would a leaking petcock cause too much gas to get to the carbs? My bike has just started to run VERY rich! It bogs down and I cant give it enough gas to keep it going! I was stumped until last night I noticed I have gas leaking around the petcock....just an idea! Thanks for the input!

Leaking around the petcock is a seal.
Gas leaking past petcock would cause gas to flow even when the bike is off.
If your floats stick gas can fill the crankcase or run out the airbox.
Look for air leaks, cracked carb boots.
This could cause the same condition.
