the tire does ride pretty close. How close is it? Only way to move it is with spacers. Go check out a manual, or look at a parts diagram and make sure your all stacked up right.

On my maxim xj650 it looked too close too. And a friend of mine said not to move it. The shaft is supposed to move up and down only. And if I move it, it will put tension on it. Some times things are better left alone.

If the bike has all the right bits correctly assembled in the right order don't try to "move"the rear wheel.

Yes , this is the way they are. I have found that some tires ride closer to the shaft than others, even if they have the same size stamped on them. I had a Kenda tire that was VERY close. I have recently put on a Parelli and there is much more room although not as much as some other shafties.

The 650 Max is just about the most docile handling machine I've ever had the pleasure to throw a leg over. Biggest issue with these bikes is neglect. Folks tend to over-tighten the oil filter housing bolt and ignore their alternator brushes. The fuse panel is a known trouble spot and should be cut out and updated first thing. Other than that, they are honey, just honey.
I used to get about 43 mpg on my 650 Max (been a while since she has seen the pavement).

The Pirelli tires (Sport Demons)are a VERY nice tire for these bikes..........

Check to see that the proper sized tire is installed. There are a lot of people with the "bigger is better" mentality. Someone familiar with 650's will have to jump in and list the correct sized tire.
