Go to an Auto Parts Store and read the instructions on several brands of degreaser.
    Gunk, STP and Engine Brite.

I think those three and AutoZone Brand are all environmentally friendly and will not harm any finished surface.

I use Gunk to clean my Engine and frame area.
    You warm-up the Bike.
    Spray it on thick.
Wait 15-Minutes for it to dissolve all those years of grime.
    Hose it off.

I also continue the cleaning process by using a Miracle Gro Hose Syphon Device.
The Syphon device adds detergent to the water ad you rinse-off the Bike.
If you add DAWN Dish detergent to the cleaning process; it further cleans-off the surfaces and leaves a nice, clean shine after you disconnect the syphon and just rinse with water.

I use simple green full strength...spray it on...let it soak for about 10 minutes..spray it off..If there is still grease/road grime then get a toilet brush do scrub it again. Also cheaper than engine degreaser.

I recently discovered Engine Brite's new trendy CITRIS based degreaser and it works wonders, even if the bike is cold. After sprayed on, I work it into really accumulated areas with a cheap 1/2" wide paint brush and respray, wait the alloted time, rinse. Works great, doesn't leave white residue on the aluminum. Simple Green works quite well too, but it's not as MEAN as engine brite. I also prefer commercially packaged "car wash" soap over dish soap. Cuts grime better, doesn't strip the wax. I wax everything that doesn't get real hot once it's clean, including chrome.

I cleaned my Aluminum covers and polished them with mothers polish and a power ball.
