    Hi to everyone here.....
This looks like a great site.
I have just got my first bike 1982 Maxim XJ750J , runs good, however I've noticed that it has no air box but it has pods. I have no idea if jets were reset
like many have said it has to be done (did search).
The vent tube from crankcase is not connected to anything,
OK here's my questions....Can I put an airbox back in it and how? I did get one.
OR do I just leave it as it is?
But I'm worryed about vent tube.......................
It smells like it's burning rich...
    HELP!!!!!!!!!

The motor has to be pulled to replace the airbox so you might as well leave it , put a little filter on the crank beather , there is a post somewhere about that.

if it runs ok and fuel consumption is ok then no drama in my opinion at the least...

the only reason that the crankcase vent (PCV valve) is connected to the airbox is to slightly improve gasmileage by recycling blow by gasses (un burnt gas) back into the intake side, in hopes of burning it the second time through. not having it connected isnt so terrible.

The PCV also serves another function which has more to do with the improved mileage than the burning of blowby. As the intake introduces a slight vaccum to the crankcase, the rings thus seat better for a tighter ring imprint on the cylinder wall, and by extension, lowering the quantity of blowby as a result. It is a win-win arrangement and will serve to lower emissions as well. You can run without it but I would advocate you get it routed back into some reasonable arrangement for it to function since it will improve your cylinder sealing which equates to greater efficency and by extension, more power. Sadly, on these bikes, one must remove the engine to install or remove the airbox (lousy oversight by the engineers, I'm certain they could have made it otherwise). Good luck to you!

    Thanx guys,
Ok here is an idea I thought of.............On each "Pod" drill one hole big enough to fit a vacuum line, then comining off breather tube T-ing it
4 ways to accomidate each pod. Does this sound like a good idea????

It would work. Lot of tubing to set up but it would work. Balanced too. Good thought!

WOW! The engine has to pulled for airbox removal? I know the carbs are a B*&%^ to get back in with everything in place, so it doesn't surprise me.

What if you have no interest in saving the airbox? Could you possibly cut it out without having to remove the engine?

the engine does not need to be out for the airbox to go in (altho it IS not a bad idea). just like the carbs (altho I found a way to get them in without killing myself, or the bike) the air box is a bear to get in there. I just wrestled with my 85 maxim x's air box for about a half hour before it gave up and went in. I love talking dirty to those bikes! if you think the bike is running rich (and it may) you could always take it to a dyno and have them do a exhaust gas annilizer on it (ega) maybe even run the thing on the dyno. does the bike have an aftermarket exhaust, or is it just the pods that are modified? the carbs may not of been rejetted or soemthing else. my bet is the carbs were not jetted.

Ok here is what I did today,
1-Built battery sensor bypass WORKS GREAT.
2-RTVed intake rubbers (cracked) seems to run better. But not totally dry.
I'm not gonna mess with AirBox yet. Gonna find small filter for breather
    tube for right now.

mcrwt644, it has an "RC" performance exhaust on it.????

    Thanx.........

I'm sorry for the confusion, my referrence for no-installability for an air box was specifically directed at the earlier (80-84) air cooled XJ's, not the newer X's. I appologize for any confusion.
