Hi, I am new to this forum, just bought a 1982 750 Maxim - my first bike in 35 years. Yesterday I changed the oil for the first time, supposedly idiot proof task, right? All went well until I was pouring the old oil from the drain pan to the recycle jug and I heard a plop. Reached in and found a spring. Looks like the right diameter to fit over the shaft of the oil filter housing, but I didn't see exactly where it came from. I am assuming it should go on top of the filter, between the filter and the crankcase, but I want to be sure. Can anybody help me out here?

yeah, the spring goes over the bolt and holds pressure downward on the filter (toward the engine).

Don't forget the metal washer also. It goes between the spring and rubber washer on the filter.

Place the Bolt through the Housing.
    Nest goes the Spring
    Then, the Flat Washer Plate
    Followed by the Filter Element.

    Note:
You may find the Flat Washer Plate missing. In the early days, the Filters were constructed of cardboard and filter material

The Washer would be pressed into the Cardboard and inadvertently discarded with the old filter.
    Fear not.

Now, filters are made of tin or steel or aluminum casings housing the filter element and can withstand the pressure of the Spring without collapsing under the Springs pressure.

Does the spring work as the pressure relief? As in, filter clogged, pressure floats the filter away from the motor, unfiltered oil goes straight to the bearings?

Is there an anti-siphon valve or thermostat in the oil cooler system?

    No. Not like that.

The Spring and Washer keep the Filter aligned over the opening on the Oil Filter Bolt where the Oil Filter flows through.

Without the Spring; the Filter is going to be able to move ... possibly having the O-ring Seal on the Filter partially cover the Bolt opening or slide way forward and not be of any use filtering the Oil at all.

The Pressure Relief Valve is inside the Oil Filter Bolt. A spring-loaded Ball Bearing type.
