As previously posted I need new fork tubes I for my 83 maxim 750 (22T). I'd love to buy new but I can't afford new. Some one suggested to me swapping out the front end. what models of bike front end would allow me to do this and which models would let me keep my triple T and hopefully my calipers.

my 81 650 maxim has front end from 550 donor bike it just slid out of one triple tree right into the other

i used forks wheel handle bar headlight the works
only problem ive had was headlight bracket was shorter but i just put in a longer bolt

if your just replacing tubes you shouldnt have any headlight problems

by the way the 81 xj550 tubes are 1.42 inches outside diameter if the 750 tubes are same on outside then 550 or 650 tubes should work

look up the fork diameter. Its either 36 or 38mm. This is a good place to start when looking for a compatiable front end. I'm pretty sure you can swap a 650 front end into the 750, but you would lose the dual discs. The same can be said for the Virago front end. It will fit but you lose the dual disc. Your best bet is finding a direct swap from another XJ750, they are after all forks and brakes made for the weight of the 750.

Its probably already been mentioned but new fork tubes from "forking by frank" are reasonably priced when compared to front ends on ebay.

yeah forks by frank are 240 plus shipping/duties/taxes same as chacal. a junk yard had a virago front end that they were going to sell me for 75$ which was a lot better condition (not one pit) than my fork tubes but i didn't get them when they said they weren't off a maxim and i didn't know if they would work on my bike. I would like to keep the dual disks if possible which means i'd probably looking at something with dual disks already, and use the callipers off it too.

Here's a pic of the left one, I think it's quite pitted but I'm new to this.

get a green nylon scrub pad like the ones you use for pots and pans
and see if you can scrub the black oxidation out of the pits

start on a less visible side to see if it works or if it makes it worse

my back fender chrome looked horribly rusty i did this it now looks like new

I know of people who have used Epoxy to fill the pitting, creating a new smooth surface, well enough so the fork seals did not need to be constantly replaced.
I'm assuming its not just a cosmetic problem.

Hey Lisa! Here's a full front end off of a '83 750. Seller doesn't ship internationally, but there's the option of shipping to a UPS store over the border (maybe Watertown?) and driving over and picking it up. Good way to save a few bucks on shipping charges too...

For the cost of re-chroming (at least here in California, durn EPA regulations), you may as well buy new from Frank.
