I saw a friend over the weekend and let him drive the 750 Maxim. He cam back and told me not to drive the bike because the chain noise and high pitched whine meant the chain was about to go? So now I'm thinking about what is going on with the chain. I have looked at the chain which appears to be fine and the bike has 21,000 miles on it. Is a "high pitched whine" normal?
And the loudest chain noise happens when the bike is cold and idling lower and rougher, before fully warmed up.

high-pitched whine probably has nothing to do with the cam chain. it's more likely coming from the constant mesh gears in the tranny where the power is transferred to the driveshaft. that's the Yamaha Shaftie Whine (TM).

I believe the gear lash can be somehow adjusted but it looks pretty involved... I'm kinda used to mine :-D

how many miles on the Max?

a slight stretch in the chain can throw it off, could also be the tensioner...you don't want that letting go going down the highway...

Does he have experience with shafts? There is always a middle gear whine. Check you cam chain tension and if it's OK there is not much need to worry.

On my xj650 between chain whiring noise and valves tapping it sometimes sounds like I'm riding a sewing machine but my chain is fine as are the valves. I actually like the whine - this is my second shaft bike.

I had the cam tensioner out when I did the head gasket and it seemed fine. However when I was back under the valve cover a short time ago I pulled on the chain and got slack. So maybe I need to pull the tensioner back out and make sure it's ratchet is not moving back in.

I checked mine the other day and could not pull any slack. so you may be on the right path.

Now if i can just get the thing off, I had the carbs off before and it was still tough. Not sure if I can even get to it now.
