Ok so I figured that putting on a new throttle cable would be easy. Install easy, went to start bike and RPM's shot up way to high for my liking. So i tried again, same result. Then I put old cable back on, same result. All of this with the gas tank removed. I have now re-routed cable thinking I may get different result re-installed gas tank now want start. I put Peacock on PRI, full choke, full throttle nothing. Any suggestions. First bike, not a mechanic. More electrical minded. Thanks....

Did you do a side-by-side comparison of the new cable to the one you took-off?

If the new cable isn't the right length and is too short for the Bike, you are going to have the situation you have with the Bike over-revving because the short cable is pulling on the Return Spring and the Linkage is opening the Throttles.

That, or the cable isn't actually seated in the grooved section of the Throttle Grip.

More likely to be too short than incorrectly installed, though.

the not starting might be a sign of flooded carbs (i think) sinc it seems to be constantly pulling on the throttle from what you say

I did compare and it was just maybe 1/2 inch shorter not much. I got the cable from a Yamaha dealer and it said for my year and XJ. Wierd thing is that the old cable did same thing. UPDATE got it started but still revves high.

I had the same problem! Check to make sure the adjuster, metal thing under the grip is pointing in the right direction. The cable should follow the handle bars.

The Handlebar Adjuster should be free too pilot within its fork-shaped hold-down.

The Slack Adjustment should be set loose enough to allow the complete return of the linkage leaving 1~2mm of free play at the Throttle Grip.

(You can actually adjust all the free play out if you are more comfortable with the operation of the Throttle Grip that way. "The Book" says to have some free play. But, it can annoying sometimes. Adjust it to your own likeness but remember that if it starts to get too tight the revs go up, ... and, you might get revs you don't want when the Handlebars are turned all the way over to the right).

right now the Slack Adjustment is as tight as it can get. Seem to me last time I tried to loosing up the revs got higher for some reason.

We are just getting confused by where the adjuster is set at.

Loose is where you have it!
Tight would be shortening-up the slack and tugging on the linkage.

    You're good.
I forget to mention functionality occasionally.

    Sorry for the confusion!

yes i hade it a loose as possible still no good. So I put the old one back on and it worked fine. During my test I noticed that the new one was slighly shorter not by much. I hope that they will take it back. When I bought it they asked me if it was the pull or something cant remember.
