Does anyone know the mechanics of the reserve position of the petcock? Is the reserve tank simply just a lower opening on the petcock (inside the tank) so that the last gallon or so of gas can get out of the tank?

Exactly... The main feed from the petcock allows the top 3/4 (or so) of the tank to feed to the carbs, then the "reserve" is accessed by turning the petcock, which allows fuel to flow through another lower opening in the screened portion of the unit inside the tank.

Even running on reserve, your tank likely will not go "bone dry". There will be some fuel sloshing around (possibly containing some water).

Is that 120 miles without the reserve ? I get 130 or so, depending on the tank & how close I fill it to the top. That translates to 38-40 mpg, so I would say you are in the ballpark...

Yeah, although this last tank did not go quite as far, about 111 miles, without reserve. I guess I thought this thing ought to be able to do 200 miles on a tank but ah well, I guess not...

Thanks for the point of reference I appreciate it.

Any thoughts of why I was getting around 45 MPG last season and only getting around 36 to 37 this season. I have to switch to reserve anywhere from 88 to 92 miles.
