I have a 1982 XJ1100J. It starts great but when I kick it into gear it stalls. I try to start it in gear but no success. This seems to be more apparent when it is cold. If by chance I am able to get it going, I have no problem from that point on when it is warmed up. Anybody out there that can give me a suggestion to the problem and the remedy.

    Thanks
    Robert

    Thanks Zookie
I am going to check the clutch and ks switches. I have heard you can jump them. Is it 2 wires that need to be jumpered once disconnected? Oil Level? Motor oil level?

There's also a Clutch Lever Switch that you should check for operating properly.

If the Switch is dried-out and stuck it "Tells" the Safety Relay you haven't pulled the Clutch Lever trying to get into gear.

Just use an Automotive Test Light.
If you stick a Straight Pin into the wire ... you can touch the Pin and see if there is current or not.

Alternatively, you can sharpen the probe end of the Test Light and push it through the wires insulation.

    Either; or ... same result!

    CHoke off( or very little)

change or clean your spark plugs

    GAS too low?

    Clean the carbs again

    sync them too

Kick stand has to be up ... or its a faulty switch ..or something

I'm certainly no expert, but another thing to check would be the clutch cable and if it's tight enough. I was going through the same woes where the minute I put it in gear it would just die, all I needed was to adjust my clutch cable.

Ok. Jumped the clutch wiring. I disconnected the feed from the clutch. Cut the end, twinned them together and plugged them back in.
Now the KS wiring has three wires. Do I twin the 2 colors together and leave the green? Some help.

yes, 2 wires are ford the actual switch circuit, and the third is for the dash safety light.
