OK, I took bike for the first ride................Went alright.
On an XJ750, At 55 MPH what should the tachometer read???
    I was getting aprox. 6500 8O

I am used to 3500 on my neighbor's Virago 1000.

My 650 maxim runs at about 65mph at around 5100rpm's in 5th gear.

Are you sure you were in 5th gear?

I'm not sure about the 750 but that doesn't sound right.

I agree with rich, something is not right.Maybe clutch slippage,if so you should feel it.My 750 runs about 6300 at 70 mph.Good luck with it.

according to a 1981 Cycle World report of a Seca 750, the engine speed was 4503 RPM at 60 MPH.

550 Seca will do approx 5500 RPM at 65MPH in 6th. Presume the Maxim is geared the same.

Nick, That 4503 has to be a misprint. these bikes were designed to rev. Those are cruiser type figures, not Seca.

    I dunno :? Hired_Goon, it was a comparison between the Seca 750, Honda CB750F, Kawasaki KZ750, and Suzuki GS750EX.
    Engine speeds @ 60 MPH were 4503, 4573, 4480, and 4328.

Not having my Seca on the road yet :( I have no way of saying right or wrong to what is printed in the article.

It sounded like I was in 4th(reving), But I counted as I shifted...
I might end up doing the clutch, I have the gears and springs for it

If anyone has the DIY pics let me know.

This bike is making me mad, But I'm not gonna give up yet.......
Sunday the engine ran fine after doing the Seafoam thing, and
yesterday it didn't want to run smooth, after warm up it ran ok but not
    smooth like Sunday.

Soooo, the clutch is my next project.
    Thanx........

Just do what all of us do. If it sounds like it's revving too much give it a boot up into the next gear. If it sounds like it's revving too low or you're heading towards a turn bump it down a gear.

I don't ever count gears... and I often look for a 6th gear. Doesn't hurt the bike to try... :D

I stand corrected Nick, Just ran the numbers through my speed calc program and 4503RPM equals 62.4 MPH. 8)

Must check my figures before I open my gob next time.

SO, Fyrman, by my calc 55 should be approx 4000RPM

That leaves a few options then. Either:

1- you were in 4th and 5th is unreachable
    2- your clutch is slipping
3- your tach is not telling the truth.

First, make sure the clutch cable is adjusted properly (2). Ask if you are not sure.

Second - find the exact RPM for 55mph. If you feel the clutch slip or the rpm's varying wildly when accelerating then refer to (2).

It's unlikely a tach would over read - but who knows... if it's gungy it could do anything?

Just got home from work, 1st thing I did was jump on bike.
At 55 MPH, Tach read 5300 RPM. I took off slow and counted all five gears.
I did not feel any slipping.
Bike sounds like a (forgive me) "CROTCH ROCKET".

This isn't a chain drive so I can't ask what sprockets... tire size shouldn't through it that much... you've got me

    Speedo error? unlikely.

Just got off the phone with local dealer......Talked to the mechanic.
RPM's for this bike at 55 MPH is about 5000, At 90 MPH approx 8000.
    Red line is 10,000
This bike has a high speed motor.
And this is suppose to be a cruising bike.....LOL

Well what a load off my back. :D

Nah - this is the engine just before the early fazer... it's probably one of the sportiest standards around. It's a real shame they turned motorcycling into two steams - sport and cruising. The old standards were sporty comfortable bikes.

I ride well above 5000 most of the time when I'm having fun...
