I'm looking for a source for inexpensive copper spark plug wire. I have an 85 XJ700 and I had alot of corrosion at the spark plug end of my coil wire, so I found a source for spark plug wire near bye, and bought steel wire as a replacement for only one coil. I was told that I need to have the same type of wire for both coils, something about balanced impedence was mentioned. Just to make sure that I have an even spark on all plugs I want to change all of my wires to copper, but I can't find any local, or sold in reasonable amounts, I only need about < 10 feet to replace them all, (that includes at least one screw up). Also, where can I get the proper spark plug caps, I might as well change those while I'm trying to make everything new on the cheap. A set of coils locally are going to run me around $150 each, and I belive that my coils are fine, just got rusty wires. Any help would be nice.
    Thanks

You should be able to get NGK caps at any motorcyle retailer that has a parts department. I got the 5 K ohm caps for mine and the work fine, somewhere around $3 to $4 dollars each.

Any autopars store should have copper core plug wire. If they don't have bulk, ask for a premade set for a 4 or 8 cylinder car and mod them.

I also found this on ebay: Copper Plug Wire

I'm not familiar with copper core wire, but I know that Standard Motor Products makes a steel solid core wire. As a matter of fact, I have a chunk of it right here. Its part number is CC7N.

NGK has a PDF file that lists several different types of plug caps. For those that are looking for an alternative to cutting up their coils to replace the ignition wires, check out the wire splicer on the last page of the pdf file.

I've used the splicer, works very well.

Well I've already used the coil cut away method to "repair" one of my coils, so using a splicer at this point is not an option. If either all copper or all steel is the way I should go, then I need to get on the other one and "fix" it. But does it matter that I have a set of coils with mixed wires, or was I just given an excuse by the mechanic as to why my bike is still not running? I'll buy a set of new coils, but only if I have to, but the price is a bit steep at $300 a set.

Forgot, thanks chadwickm for the link on the copper wire. For whatever reason copper plug wire is a hard thing to find around here. When I was a kid you could go down to almost any auto parts store and buy the stuff in bulk. I'll buy wire if thats what the general opnion is, I'm still not sure if that is even my problem. But I'll get some new caps for sure. The ones that I have on the bike are the orignals and could be replaced, it could only help.

I don't think steel or copper really matters as long as they are all the same.

I´ve sourced copper core 7mm from NAPA and I am aware that most agriculture (tractor) shops carry it.

Thanks for everyones help. I know that I'll have to "fix" the other coil, so I'll first try to swap out the old copper cables with the steel cables that I already have on the newly repaired coil, then see where to go from there. Still need to buy some new caps for all the coils though. Thank God there is always tomorrow. Couldn't get anything done today, was saying good bye to my brother, he's on his way to Iraq and there was no way that I was going to miss that. Gonna miss him.

Our prayers are with him, safe journey and God speed to a safe return. Do remember that Chacal can hook you up with all the parts you may need to effect repairs; caps, wires, epoxy, just give him a holler.
