Okay, I'm new here but not to bikes, this is my first XJ.

I bought my XJ 2 months ago and the neck/steering bearings were worn. I put it in the shop and had the bearings replaced. I picked up the bike and rode it home and didn't really notice anything out-of-sorts with the bike. The next day, I'm out in the garage replacing the spark plugs and I start looking closely at the bike and notice the headlight really didnt appear to be pointing straight when I pulled the handlebars to center. So I put the bike up on the center stand and sure enough the left fork appears to be approx. 1 inch out of alignment with the right fork.

Any ideas about how to re-align the forks? I don't really want to put it back in the shop for another 2-3 weeks. There's only 1 shop in town that will even touch a bike over 7 yrs old and they are always swamped with work.

I'd appreciate any advice that's given.

You can loosen the bolts on the bottom yoke & bounce the front end & re-tighten. The correct method involves removing the headlight assembly so you can check alignment with a square of 6mm plate glass.

My buddy's XJ1100 had tweaked forks. We had a hard time getting them to straighten out, until we realized that the cross brace under the fender (that skinny piece of metal) was tweaked too, and kept the forks from aligning correctly.

if yours are out that far, you'll probably also have to loosen the big bolt on the top of the triple tree, and the allen pinch bolt below it.. also check the tubes to make sure they're not bent.

    Okay.....problem solved!

I was lying in bed last night thinking about my problem and it hit me. The top yoke of the triple tree had to be misaligned with the bottom yoke when the shop re-installed the tree back on the bike after replacing the bearings. So this morning I made a trip to the parts store and bought a set of metric allen wrenches, got home and loosened the the top and bottom pinch bolts on the left fork, loosened the pinch bolt on the neck and the neck bolt. Torked the handlebars to the left while holding the front tire between my knees, checked alignment and then re-cinched the pinch bolts starting at the bottom and working my way to the neck.

YEA! Now all is right in my world.

Thanks for all the advice, I really appreciated it.
