After over three months of toil and frustration I finally have the '82 650 Maxim up and running well. Thanks much for the imput I got from this site to answer needed questions on some issues. Although I have rebuilt many a bike this one was in some ways the most frustrating one ever. I even ran out of my considerable inventory of bad words and had to make up a whole bunch of new ones, some ran into the 12 syllable class.
I had found this thing sitting on the side of the road with a for sale sign on it and in a brief moment of insanity bought it and took it home. Rough shape does not even begin to start to describe the shape it was in. Last licensed in '86 she had obviously been hiding in the back of someones shed. Only the Lord knows what was wrong with it before the guy I got it from bought it and tried to get it going but it was much worse for the wear AFTER he tried to fix it up! Fortunately he had given up on it before he completely destroyed it and sold it to me cheap. Two flat tires, carbs destroyed, no brakes, fuse box completely jumpered out, battery broken, all handlebar controls broken, no functional light bulbs. one mirror (broken), no handgrips, oil filter and spring installed backwards and many many missing parts.
She is now purring like a large kitty and getting 48mpg on average. I have put over 450mi on her in the last week and a half with only one problem (minor) and will be using her as a daily ride to work and back and also my in town runner.

That's incredible! Congratulations on a job well done!

If you haven't nicknamed the bike yet, I'd recommend Lazarus... from the sounds of your adventure in getting it running it would be fitting.

Sorry Marine, neglected to get a complete before picture. Believe me it would have brought tears to your eyes. As for the name, Lazuras was brought up, along with Skeletor (due to the skull) but my youngest son just calls it the "Little Dragon"

I do have some before pics of certain areas of the bike. Here is one of the guys idea of a battery cable. This is what had broken the battery (internally). Actually I kinda like guys like this, they allow me to buy bike cheap. Just gotta do a lot of work to get them going
