I had the same issue when I was restoring my 81 XJ750 Seca, no air box so I chose pods and have not had any issues and glad I made that decision....
Nice bike, were did you get the engine guards?
I added a shorter hex screw to replace the drain screw so it's open all the time and and added the fuel line to check the fuel level at all...
Unfortunately I haven't ridden an XJ750 with the stock air box, When I picked up the 2 bikes to make this one neither had the stock air box....
It's a very useful mod, lets me see if all bowls are working properly . Hope this helps
