You will be fine untill we start getting into summer when the temps you ride in don't go much below 60*F the manual says 10-40 under 60 I think then 20-40 above. If you are like me and ride from well The last two weeks until we got more snow you will be fine with the 10-40. I do the filter and oil preseason and then just change to the 15-40 when the weather gets warmer. You will know when it's time as the bike will shift difference

You should be fine. I will be moving to 5W 40 next time I change mine. I'm moving to Rotella T.

The first number gives a relative number of how easy it will allow the engine to turn over. The second number gives the viscosity.

Check out the Motor Oil Bible to learn more. It gives a pretty detailed explanation of viscosity. I have a couple of posts that have a link to it.

    Goin synthetic huh Joe....

ssshhhhh that what I have in my X right now the synth 5-40W for this time of year the bike absolutely loves it!!!! I ran the Rotella 15-40W all last summer and it did fine with that as well. I have come to like both the price and the way the bike acts with the Rotella. I was going to wait until I had a few hudred miles and more riding conditions before I put out my tak eon the 5-40W oil. But the 15-40 worked solid all last year for me.

I'm running Mobil's motorcycle synthetic in 10W 40 now and haven't had any problems. I'm a fan of synthetic oil, but the Mobil stuff is way to expensive for the long haul. At $10.50 a gallon, Rotella T is for me. :)

My manual says 10W-30 in cooler temperatures and 20W-40 in warmer temps. I just combined the two and run 10W-40 all the time. Never had a problem. I use regular dino oil and change it every 2,000 miles.
