Has anyone found a direct fit speedo from another Yamaha that will fit a 750 Maxim gauge set?
Just getting tired of looking at that 85MPH Speedo

for the 82 or 83? I put a 160 MPh speedo in the 82 that I had it was not a direct fit, had to cut the back a bit to fir it in properly. I think it was from a XS (77 or 78 can't remember for sure). I do not know of one being a direct fit.

On my wife's 83 a swaped in the whole gage unit from an 78 XS1100 it was plug and play except for the tach. If I ever get and 82 tank she will have a gas gage to boot.

BigFitz fitted a "900" speedo with some trimming that tops out at 150.

The Honda Silverwing 650 speedo reads to 130 which is an appropriate speed, but it's "canned".

Are they "canned" as above, or are they in a cluster and easily accessible?

On the 83 760 it uses the 5K5 speedo from the 550. same with the 650

It's a cluster with the LCD in the middle. My 83 has gauges like the 650 does.

The speedo for the 750 has something wrong with it. It's reading 10 MPH too low and I tried to lube it but no changes after. Figured it would be nice to upgrade to a higher MPH speedo. I found a XS 750 Gauge set that might work but I need to get them side by side.

Let me know what you find, I'd love to lose the 85 mph speedo as well!

Once, long ago, I would have loved to see what the top speed of my 650's was, but now as I'm getting older and wiser, I'll be happy just getting to 85 as fast as I can... once I get done with my restoration, that is.

I also would like to know if anybody figures this out. My original one read slow, then completely broke. I found one that was *nearly* a direct fit at the scrapyard. Two problems, lost trip odometer because it didn't fit, and it's another silly Reaganometer.

Edit: meaning it also only goes to 85 per. And it is also slow, like MN's problem, and like my original when it worked. Seems to be a problem with 82 750's. I have a gps mounted now, but would love a good speedo.

Update: I have set the cluster from a 79 XS 750 and the cluster from my 750 XJ side by side. The XS speedo looks to be about the same size as the XJ . The gauge face is not quite the same so I'm tring to figure out if I can swap both the tach and the speedo into my housing. I'm going to try to get some pictures of this in here later.

We can't really blame Reagan, I did some more research.

That's really a Nixon-Ford-Carter-Reaganometer; the whole stupid idea began long before RR took office. It was conceived in '73 but not enacted until '79, as part of the 55mph national speed limit insanity.

The 85mph speedometer requirement was actually gone by late 1981, but Yamaha apparently never felt the need to change until they'd used up their stock. So even though your '82 or even '83 model year bike may have come with one, OTHER 1983 model year bikes came with 120, 125 or even 150mph speedometers.

Pretty much any Yamaha cluster-mounted instrument of the desired speed range will work; it could come from a different XJ (like I did using one from a 900) a Virago, or even a Venture. Yamaha has utilized a real mish-mash mixture of "canned" instruments and cluster-mounted instruments over the years so there are all sorts of possibilities. You need to look for something pre-1980 (mostly all "canned" at that time) or at different 1983 or later bikes for a "proper" speedo. Keep in mind that even some '83s came with the 85mph units.

Concerning the "fit" of other (cluster-mounted) instruments in your cluster-- see the pic below. The cluster-mounted instruments, while not exactly identical, will generally exchange with a little work. The "canned" instruments' frames are slightly larger/longer and have their input stub at a slightly different angle.

NOTE FRAME SHAPE AND INPUT STUB ANGLE: (L-R) Orig from 550; XJ900 unit; guts from "canned" 125mph speedo.

SLIGHT DIFFERENCE IN FRAMES required a little modification to the inner housing: (See pic above for view of mounting area before trimming.)

Oh, yeah, I didn't mean to say it was Reagan's fault, I had always heard the 55 limit was during the Nixon era. But the eighties are the Reagan era, so...

I also had an '85 T-Bird with digital dash, that also only went to 85 mph, but the funny thing was the computer had an "average speed" calculator, that had no limit. Yeah, so you could reset it on the fly to get "instant" average speed. Pushing the reset button on the dash while trying to get a current speed at over 100 is not the safest thing ever. I blame Ford for forcing me to do that:)

So no confirmed near perfect fit for 82 XJ750J maxims with Atari unit and the flat tire shaped speedometers/tach faces?

Not that I've been past 80 yet or need a speedo (several spare ataris with untested gushes).
