1980 maxim 650 starting issues.

    12088480_905581666186819_3966613435217587165_n.jpg I am a newbie to bikes in general and as my first project i grabbed a 1980 maxim for $150,i have cleaned the carbs,changed the oil and gas,cleaned the petcock and put new spark plugs as well as a new starter solenoid and battery,now when i try to turn it over the bike just clicks and nothing else,the tails lights,blinkers and dash lights all work so as a rookie i am out of ideas until the manual gets here next week so PLEASE someone with more knowledge then i help me.

    Do you have a volt meter? Check your battery voltage to make sure its completely charged. If it is and you are getting 12 plus volts to the starter, you are going to have to pull the starter out and check the brushes and armature.

    i do not have 1 on hand but im sure i can barrow one from a friend,now if and when i take the starter out what would i be looking for problem wise?

    After I rebuilt my starter mine would turn over once or twice then just click. Problems were I didn't clean up the copper surface where the brushes turn ( they were dragging) and I put too much grease on the inner gears.
    I had to refill the water on the battery only getting 9.6 volts before after I get at least 12.4 volts.
