Hi all , i have a 1980 xj750 seca , and the carbs that are with the bike are mikuni bs32ss carbs , i have been doing alot of looking around here and all other xj750's are running hitachi 32 mm carbs , the previous owner of this bike assures me that these are the original carbs ..i am just wondering if some of the very early xj750's were fitted with mikuni carbs ?

They started making the 750 in 1981, can you post your VIN from the frame neck, and the "shorty" from the engine, above the clutch??

The only 32mm Mikunis that I'm aware of were fitted to the 650 Turbo; the 550s had Mikunis but those were BS28s.

    Let's see that VIN.

The bikes registration details say its first registration is sep 1980 .. i know these short VIN numbers can be a bit vague ..Hope this helps ... :)

Chacal has some VIN decoding information here: http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=14577.html

The 5G2 model ID definitely says 750 SECA 1981-1983.

The serial number, if I'm reading it correctly, seems to say 1982, but I', not sure. Is there another, longer, VIN somewhere on the steering head tube?

If those numbers are the "shorty VIN" ("engine" number) and the end of the number off the steering head, they don't match. (..03748 vs. ..03669.) If that's the case, you've got a "transplant" case there, and anything's possible. The '81 750 Seca motor should have Hitachi carbs, so there's been some swappage happened.

I was thinking there was something not right with the carbs that they should be 32mm hitachi ones , the vin number i gave is what is stamped on the head stock , i did get another bike with this one and the engine number is IV5204427 so maybe that is the correct engine for my bike ,the joys of buying a basket case but it makes it fun and you learn more :)

Umm, no that one doesn't match either. If the number on the frame ends in 03748, then the matching engine's number would end in 03748.
