1980 XJ650 Carb boot issue:)

    Ok. So I took the bike apart about 2 years ago. I've been slowly putting it back together as I find the parts and money. I took a lot of pics and made a fair number of diagrams for the more complex parts. I have to say I have never been this lost before.

    The carb boots that go between the carb and motor will not align. I know for a fact the vacuum nipples were all pointing up when I disassembled. I did not mark the boots 1-4 as I did not see the need:) Now here I 'am, in search of knowledge. I can get them all lined up if 1 of 4 up side down??? Nothing has changed, these are the boots that came off the bike......I know there is a difference between the Non-YCIS(me) and YCIS models.......I will add pics later if needed....I have tried every possible combination and it is eluding me. The boot with the vacuum line for the fuel valve is #3 right? That is from left the right facing forward.

    Any Ideas??

    The vacuum line for fuel valve does NOT have to be #3 but that is what it was when the bike was manufactured. Put it on whatever boot your heart desires - doesn't really matter. If you claim to have the correct boots; the nipples all point up and the screws are aligned like this \ \ \ \

    However, YICS boots with the nipples all pointing up are aligned like this / / \ \

    Perhaps you have one of the four that is not stock for non-YICS, or you have two identical non-YICS boots making it easier to rotate one 180 degrees for better alignment?

    My question for the general audience would be, does it really matter if one nipple is upside down?

    it would make syncing the carbs difficult if not impossible.

    care to elaborate on this? If its directly pointing down you can still get a vacuum line on it... and no I'm not being a smarta$$, I've currently got a boot installed on my non-YICS engine just like this (although I plan to fix it correctly because of another boot that is for a YICS engine is installed on my engine as well and makes it almost impossible to sync the carbs because of that nipple location~ about a 4 o'clock position directly into a boot next to it). I was just curious how the nipple orientation has an effect on syncing, that's all.

    I'm on a budget and the boots are in good condition.....I'm going out this afternoon to look at it again. I agree that it should not affect the vacuum up or down as long as you can get access to the nipple. Thanks for the reply.

    The carbs bowls and the closeness of the upper engine case severely limits access to that area. If the vacuum ports are oriented down it would be nigh on impossible to fit a manometer to them.
