I'm seen a local ad for a 1981 Seca 750 that seems to be in mint shape with only the exhaust changed and 29,000 kms on the dial. The Kelley Blue Book has the value at under $1K but the seller is asking $1800. What's a super clean example worth these days?

Im guessing you are in Canada by your use of kilometers? Down here in Cali Ive seen a lot of XJ's listed for sale. The really clean running ready to ride examples average around $14-1800. For example I bought my Max "running" (as in idling only) with 4200mi on the clock for $700. Its a little rough cosmetically but all it needed to be roadworthy was a set of brake pads, carb cleaning and a battery. So IMHO $1800 for a Seca with that many Km on it is a little optimistic. I'd say $1000-1250 unless its got records of continued correct maintenance and has good tires...

Bike dealers here in Ontario are asking $1800 for street ready bikes. Otherwise under $1000 with no safety inspection.

You are correct and I am in Canada. The bike I am considering is a private sale without the government mandatory safety check or the used vehicle information package. The $1800 asking seems a bit high is all. It looks nice in the pictures and I guess it all depends on how badly I want a 30 year old bike.

if there is alot of maintance records and new tires all aaround, new battery and alot stuff done to it, with documentation then its probably worth a few extra $ then the standard bikes, but yes, i agree seems slightly high.

Meh... It's typical of asking price for something like that around here. Too much in my opinion, though. I'd bide my time and wait for a better deal.

Are you sold on a Seca? Not a Yamaha, but looks like a pretty good deal to me! http://ottawa.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles ... Z282731328

I paid $600 for a collector plated 82 in January. 33,000 kms, road ready with new tires, battery and brakes. All I needed were fork seals replaced $240. But - it was the middle of winter with a desperate seller. Out here on the west coast , Craigslist prices for early 80's maxims and seca's in good condition are $1500 -$1800 asking, Offer $1400 if it's in good condition, or, if you really want the bike, pay the $1800 and enjoy it.

Seca, Nighthawk, whetever. I'm not stuck on one versus the other and I did see that NH750 from several weeks ago. The lady was asking $2500 but has since dropped the price. It's a bit of a drive and I've asked about her reason for repainting and where she had the work done but never received a reply. It looks nice in the pictures though.

Lots of good advice and I was thinking that if it was mint then perhaps a decent proce would be around the $1200 to $1400 range. Might be worth a drive just for the heck of it.

Just depends, i was able to find a 650xj 83 with 20k miles , new front break, front and rear tires, new wiring fuses, all lights worked, new seat and extra seat, extra aftermarket window, and alot of other odds and ends, and i paid 600 USD for it, and she is turn key, ready to ride as she sits, OHHh and new battery.

Just just got a new bike and wanted to sell it, he had it posted on CL for 900. and i got him down to 600.

    hard to pass up
