I just purchased an air box and was wondering if I have to remove the engine to install it, or if there is an easier way? Thanks

On my 650 I removed the carbs, intake boots, and starter. With some careful maneuvering I got it in there with no real issues. Not sure if that would work the same on a 550 or not

Loosen the rear engine mounting bolt, and remove the front engine mounting bolts to allow the engine to "tip" forward a bit.

You'll still need to do all this, of course: remove the carbs, intake boots, and starter.
