So I bought an XJ650 as a new project and it will not turn over. New battery and new starter solenoid. Bike still wont turn over. Yet when Solenoid is barred over using a screw driver the bike turns over. Where could the issue be?

Welcome to the forum. Take the time to do some searching on the board to find some of the information. Lots of posts here will cover what to do . Don't know how much wrenching you have done of your background with tools and test equipment?

Do you have a manual yet? If not, you should get one, they have wiring diagrams in them that will help you with what wires to trace and even the color of the wires.

Time to trouble shoot the starter ckt. I have had a few bikes that have had button issues, rust or corrosion on the button. Broken wires in the right bar control or even a open wire from the trigger wire to the button.

Get some test tools and start to do some testing. Good luck and keep us posted on progress.

Try giving the starter motor a few taps. My bet is it’s the brushes worn out in the starter.
