I recently ordered parts to replace the valve shims on my 81 xj650LH. Cracked te valve cover and spent a while scraping that old paper gasket off. My question is what do I use to apply the new gasket. This gasket is a paper one as Opposed to the rubber one that bigfitz52 has in his tutorial. Anybody else have any info on applying there types of valve cover gaskets?

I have exact same gasket on my 650. Spent too much $ investing in gaskets (the paper quality sucks!) but eventually tried the "High-Tack" stuff bigfitz52 uses for the rubber gasket. it worked and the next time I took the valve cover off to seal the half moons (don't forget to "High-Tack" those!) a couple hundred miles later, the gasket was still sealed to the valve cover like it should've been!

Long story short, I'm pleased using the same gasket sealant bigfitz52 uses in his tutorial & applied it to my 550 last week

Its a different valve cover gasket design for 81 (paper) vs 82 (rubber). For paper gaskets use Permatex flexible gasket sealer on one side of th gasket, works great for me

The High-Tack spray will work on that type of gasket as well.

There are very few applications for which I use a different sealer, that stuff will handle pretty much everything; plus because it's generally sprayed on, it's NEAT.

It's perfect for flat gaskets. Apply about 10~15 minutes before you're ready to seat your cover.
