I am cleaning my brake calipers and putting in new o-rings. There is a pin that keeps the two halves of the caliper together. The channel it runs through has a rubber boot on either end of it (see picture). Do those rubber boots come out? I gave them a bit of a pull, but they seem quite reluctant...

Also, there are two square channels that were filled with crap of some sort - are they just meant to be cleaned out, or should they hold something (a shim lies over the top of them)?

Leave the boots on unless they have failed. The block runs clean and dry. The channels are there to give road grime a place to go, so the mating surfaces stay clean.

Just cleaned my calipers too...the boots are good except one has small crack. I could prob add break grease via a needle tip to fill the boot? Any suggestions? I am considering buying pair from Len $33 . To your point, they did not pop out when i was cleaning the channel. I didnt want to tear them either, tried to be gentle with my work. I added grease etc to insert the pin( I was trying to pack the boot with grease, not really successful).
