I'll start with I have ZERO experience with wrenching on bikes. From cars to farm equipment is my niche. Anyways.....

It's no secret the handle bars on the '82 Maxim are hideous. If I'm to understand correctly, replacing the tree with one from an '83 will make it possible to attach something more comfortable. I found this on ebay, just wondering if this is what I need.

I bought my first Yamaha this weekend and fell in love with it(for $250 I couldn't say no). I know its hideous, but it's my hideous two-wheeled freedom machine!

Thanks in advance for any advice!

That will work as far as fit and allowing use of "real" handlebars, but the method in which the gauges attach to the steering head may be different/not compatible with mounting your 1982 cluster back on............

Excellent! I honestly wont miss that gauge cluster. The tach doesn't go past 2k.

    Thanks for the help!

Why not take everything for the handlebars off the tree, then mount some risers in their location (red circles)

You'd want to double check and make sure the spread is the correct distance....

the only advantage to a different tree would be that you will loose a few of the original balls and be forced to get tapered roller bearings, but you should do that either way
